Clifton
Clifton is one of the oldest and most affluent areas of the city, much of it having been built with profits from tobacco and the slave trade. Situated to the west of Bristol's city centre, it was at one time a separate settlement but became attached to Bristol by continuous development during the Georgian era and was formally incorporated into the city in the 1830s. Grand houses, that required many servants, were built in the area. Although some were detached or semi-detached properties, the bulk were built as terraces, many with three or more floors. One famous terrace is the majestic Royal York Crescent, visible from the Avon Gorge below and looking across the Bristol docklands. ¥

Downend
The outward expansion of Downend dating from the 1980s has been contained by the presence of the M4 motorway which swings around the northern side of Bristol. Downend has little industry within its boundaries, consisting mainly of domestic housing and local shopping facilities. A welcome development since 2003 is the opening of several premises as independently owned restaurants, allowing residents to eat out locally and a designer clothes store. Downend has its fair share of parks including The King George V Playing Fields, and there is also a local cricket club located in the centre of Downend. Secondary and primary schools based in Downend include Downend School (a comprehensive), Bromley Heath Junior and Infant schools and Christ Church Primary and Junior schools. There are a few local churches although the closest are Downend Baptist Church on Salisbury Road and the Christ Church on Downend Road.¥

The area lends its name to the NHS-run Southmead Hospital, although this is actually situated in the neighbouring district of Westbury on Trym. Central Southmead features a variety of shops surrounded by very grassy areas and wide roads.
In recent years, efforts have been made to improve the area's social problems and implement environmental improvements, many of which have been successful. This is thought to be one of Bristols roughest places but it is well under way for making a change in the right direction.¥

St. George is a district of Bristol on the edge of the inner city, named - presumably - after England's own Patron Saint - Saint George, celebration day April 23rd.
Facilities: St George Public Library - a prefabricated style building which replaced the previous stone built Victorian building, demolished when it was fashionable to pull down older buildings. Recently, there has been much televised about the palace at Knew Gardens and it is interesting to note the similarities in design of this building and the old red brick St George Higher Grade, later St George Grammar and finally St George Comprehensive School. Its turbulent history has been marked by rapid growth. The area was damaged during World War II followed with large immigration shortly afterwards. Sadly neglect, crime and drugs became common in the area and persist today.
St Paul's has a large Afro-Caribbean population. The poverty of the area has created a strong community spirit shown in the yearly St Paul's carnival held on the first Saturday in July. This is a vibrant parade with most of the children from the local primary schools joining in.
The race riots which, followed a police raid on the Black and White cafe on 2nd April 1980, formed a low point of the area's history. The St Paul's riot started when the police entered the Black and White cafe on suspicion of drug dealing. A customer had their trousers ripped and demanded compensation which the police refused. A crowd outside then refused to allow the police to leave and when back up was called a riot started.¥
